It seems KDE has an option of "slow keys" which try to remember what you press for more than 8 seconds. So if you do so, the keyboard stops working. The problem is big, but the solution pretty simple. Edit the file .kde/share/config/kaccessrc to set the field "slow keys" to FALSE. That would do the trick.
